Breda Photo, International photo festival

With this photo exhibition “Another street view” KOP wants to make a connection to the on and offline world. KOP creates a visual exploration though the image jungle of Breda. Though QR codes you are guided though the city and the exhibition.

Participating photographers are:
Jan Adriaans, Fieke van Berkom, Julia van den Broek, Job Janssen, Thomas Kuijpers, Diederick Overbeke, Robert Overweg, Willem Popelier, Jon Rafman (VS), Joachim Schmid (DUI), Nadine Stijns, Gerard Suk, Michelle-Aimee van Tongerloo en Michael Wolf (VS).

I will be exhibiting 6 images along a designated road. Two new photographs made especially for two specific locations.

You might have read or heard about me and my work on Kotaku, Gizmodo, BBC-radio or BBC-website

I am a photographer in the virtual world, started in 2007. Back then I made photographs in which I wanted to show the fading border between the virtual and physical world. I was photographing in the virtual world in the same way as I was doing in the real world. I graduated in 2008 from the art academy in Arnhem (as a designer) did an internship in London and worked in Amsterdam. My work was shown in several exhibitions in Breda, The Hague, Zutphen and I had a debate about the possibility to create anything in the virtual world.

I decided to look for ways to further develop my work and vision. I met Hicham from TAG who offered me an artist in residence, I worked at TAG and Todays Art office where I reflected on my own work, I made a lot of new work and experimented with ways of presentation. The results of this period have been exhibited in Amsterdam and Cologne this was supported by Fonds BKVB.

I make my photographs out of curiosity, because I feel some sort of necessity and not for commercial gain.

On friday the 18th of june, TAG opens the new exposition Robert Overweg: photographer in the virtual world at the Concrete image gallery in Amsterdam. Overweg ends his successful artist in residence period at TAG with an exhibition where he shows the results of this residence.

Overweg dwells through the virtual worlds of first and third person shooter games. He looks into the similarities, differences and borders between the virtual and the physical world. Borders which are being tested and stretched by Overweg.

He sees the virtual world as a direct expansion of the “real” world, the virtual places where players come together in multiplayer maps are for Overweg the new public spaces of contemporary society. For him it is logical to document his experiences and research through his photography. While making use of the new possibilities the virtual world give him.

“Robert overweg was invited by TAG, The Hague, to develop his work as a streetphotographer in virtual worlds. In 1st and 3rd person games he explores the new possibilities these worlds offer to capture his images. Overweg considers a computergame a direct extension of his environment. He behaves as a ‘regular’ photographer in a ‘normal’ landscape. His work raises some questions regarding rights: with his photos he claims these virtual worlds, though they were made by other artists. A new view on copyright and the definitions of photography.”
